The 5G Era Begins: Jazz, Zong, and Ufone Officially Qualify for Pakistan’s Historic 5G Spectrum Auction

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is set to launch its most significant digital leap yet. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that Jazz, Zong, and Ufone have officially qualified for the country’s historic first 5G spectrum auction.

In a final list issued on March 3, 2026, the regulator confirmed that these operators met all technical and financial requirements, including the submission of a mandatory $15 million bank guarantee each. This milestone sets the stage for the final bidding process, scheduled to commence on March 10, 2026.

The Bidding War for 5G A total of 597.2 MHz of spectrum across six frequency bands is up for grabs. To ensure a robust 5G launch in Pakistan, the PTA has made bidding mandatory for the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands, which are globally recognised as the backbone for high-capacity 5G networks.

Notably, no new international players entered the race before the February 27 deadline. This leaves the “Big Three”—now composed of PTCL (Ufone) and Telenor Pakistan following their recent merger—to lead the nation’s digital transformation.

What does this mean for the Pakistani Public? For students, freelancers, and businesses across the country, this development promises a future of high-speed internet in Pakistan.

  • 10x Faster Speeds: 5G is expected to deliver download speeds of up to 100Mbps initially, reaching 1Gbps as the network matures.
  • Phased Rollout: Commercial services are expected to go live in major cities like Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore by mid-2026.
  • Economic Boost: The government aims to raise over $600 million from the sale, which will be reinvested in digital infrastructure.

Preparation for the Big Day. To ensure total transparency, the PTA has scheduled a mock auction on March 5 to allow the qualified bidders to familiarise themselves with the electronic clock auction format. Unlike previous years, the exchange rate for the license fee has been pegged to the auction date to protect operators from PKR volatility, encouraging more aggressive investment in the Jazz Zong Ufone 5G rollout.

As the countdown to March 10 begins, the PTA 5G spectrum auction is being viewed as the single most important event for the country’s telecom sector this decade, promising to bridge the digital divide and place Pakistan on the global map of advanced connectivity.
