Later development, checked 1 October 2026: FBR’s official updates now list September notifications SRO 1640(I)/2026, SRO 1641(I)/2026 and SRO 1642(I)/2026 concerning remunerative social-media income. The April drafts discussed below are historical consultation documents. Read the later instruments, their scope and effective provisions before applying any procedure; this page does not certify that the April wording carried forward unchanged.
Historical consultation update — originally reported 2 April 2026; corrected 1 October 2026. This report concerns consultation drafts, not confirmation that the proposed procedures became operative. Our earlier closing paragraphs overstated their legal effect.
FBR’s resident creator draft, SRO 546(I)/2026, and non-resident draft, SRO 545(I)/2026, were dated 1 April 2026 and invited objections within seven days of Gazette publication. The April consultation period is historical. Its expiry alone does not establish final enactment.
Why the headline needed clarification
A revenue benchmark used in a proposed income calculation is different from a tax charged directly on each block of views. Readers should not treat PKR195 per thousand views as a bill from FBR, or interpret a user-interaction threshold as an exemption based on a channel’s subscribers.
What to check before acting
Identify the document that actually governs your filing period. Record its notification number, draft or final status, effective date and amendments. Separate platform income from other receipts and retain records of actual payouts and withholding. A proposal about one income stream does not establish the treatment of all of your earnings.
We have moved the detailed reader guidance to our creator-tax proposal explainer. It distinguishes income from tax due and provides a records checklist. This earlier page preserves the consultation timeline instead of presenting a second conflicting set of rules.
For current law, consult FBR’s Income Tax Ordinance resources. For filing preparation, use our document checklist. Seek advice appropriate to your income category and residence before submitting a return.
Independent educational reporting; subsequent final notifications must be checked separately.
