Historical report — originally published 4 March 2026; corrected 1 October 2026. The earlier version mixed parliamentary passage, final enactment, platform licensing and tax treatment. Its suggested universal 15% capital-gains rate and blanket legality statements have been removed because the cited banking material does not establish them.
Read a bill report as a stage in the process
The original news report concerned a virtual-assets bill in the National Assembly. A report about parliamentary passage should not be used alone to establish the final law, effective date, implementing rules or a particular provider’s authorisation. Those questions require the relevant final documents.
For the later banking position, SBP’s BPRD Circular Letter No. 10 of 2026 states that the Virtual Assets Act 2026 has been enacted. Our updated banking and tax-records explainer explains its permissions and limits.
Three questions to keep separate
- Regulation: What activity does the final framework permit, and who supervises it?
- Provider authorisation: Does the exact entity have the current authorisation required for the service being offered?
- Tax reporting: Which tax provisions apply to your actual receipts, disposals, residence and reporting period?
An answer to one question does not settle the other two. A headline about a bill is not evidence that every platform is licensed, and a banking circular is not a tax schedule.
Records useful for a filing review
Retain transaction histories, account statements, fees, acquisition and disposal records and transfers between accounts. Reconcile those records before asking an adviser to determine their treatment. See our return-preparation checklist and the official Income Tax Ordinance resources.
This historical page does not certify the original bill’s parliamentary record, a platform’s licence or a particular crypto-tax rate. For errors, send the relevant primary document through our corrections procedure.
