Source correction — 2 October 2026: The earlier version presented PKR 820 billion, an 18% sales-tax increase and explanations for July performance as confirmed FBR data without a specific primary release. Those assertions have been withdrawn pending the underlying record. This page now explains how to check monthly collection reports.
A monthly revenue headline can combine an early collection total, an assigned target and a later estimate. Before comparing figures, record the period, publication date, source and whether the number is provisional, final, gross or net of refunds.
Three separate comparisons
- Target gap: collection minus the target for the same month. A positive gap means the reported figure exceeds that target.
- Year-on-year change: current-month collection minus collection in the corresponding month of the previous year. This is a different comparison from the target gap.
- Cumulative performance: collection for the fiscal-year period to date compared with the target or prior-year total for that same period.
A result in one comparison does not establish a result in another. A month can exceed its target while the year-to-date total remains below its cumulative target.
Illustrative arithmetic, not a current revenue claim
Suppose a hypothetical monthly target is PKR 100 billion and a provisional collection is PKR 105 billion. The target surplus is PKR 5 billion, or 5% of the target. If the comparable prior-year month was PKR 95 billion, the year-on-year increase is PKR 10 billion, approximately 10.53%. The two percentages answer different questions.
If the collection later changes to PKR 104 billion after reconciliation, update both comparisons and retain a note identifying the revision. Do not silently combine the revised total with calculations made from the earlier one.
What the total does not explain
A combined collection number does not by itself show how much came from income tax, sales tax, customs or federal excise. It also does not prove that higher receipts came from enforcement, economic growth or increased imports. Those explanations need separate evidence. Keep reported figures and the writer’s interpretation visibly separate.
A source sheet for readers and editors
Use columns for period, tax category, amount/unit, target, comparable prior-year amount, refund treatment, provisional/final status, release date and exact source link. Leave missing information blank and label it unavailable. Do not fill gaps with an assumed percentage or unattributed statement from an official.
Start with FBR’s revenue collections material and the dated release supporting the particular month. This guide does not claim a verified July 2026 total. TaxToday will restore a dated July report only after obtaining the specific underlying source.
