PM Shehbaz Sharif Unveils Strict Austerity Plan and National Work From Home Policy

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday addressed the nation, unveiling a comprehensive 14-point emergency strategy to insulate Pakistan from the soaring global energy prices triggered by the Middle East conflict. The Prime Minister’s latest Shehbaz Sharif austerity plan aims to slash government expenditures and reduce fuel consumption as international oil prices surge past $100 per barrel.

In a move to curb the rising import bill, the Premier announced a mandatory work from home Pakistan policy for 50% of the public sector workforce. This remote working arrangement, reminiscent of the pandemic era, applies to all non-essential government departments and is expected to significantly lower the daily fuel demand for official commuting.

Key Measures of the National Austerity Plan

Addressing the citizens via a televised broadcast, PM Shehbaz Sharif stated that the “burden of austerity must start from the top.” He confirmed that federal ministers, advisers, and special assistants will not draw their salaries for the next two months. Additionally, the government has imposed a 25% salary cut on all Members of Parliament.

The premier further ordered a 50% reduction in the fuel quota for all government vehicles, except for emergency services such as ambulances. To ensure further savings, the government grounded 60% of its official vehicle fleet and imposed a complete ban on the purchase of new vehicles, air conditioners, and luxury furniture until June 2026.

Relief for the Common Man

While the global energy crisis—fueled by the escalating conflict in the Middle East—forced a record Rs55 per litre hike in petroleum prices last week, the Prime Minister assured the public that these measures aim to prevent further inflation. Senior bureaucrats in Grade 20 and above will also see a two-day salary deduction, which the government will redirect to provide financial relief to low-income segments.

Education and Travel Restrictions

The austerity drive also extends to the education sector, where all higher educational institutions must shift to online classes starting March 16. Schools across the country will observe a two-week break during the same period to minimize transport usage. Furthermore, the Prime Minister placed a strict ban on all non-essential foreign visits for government officials and ministers, directing that all official meetings and seminars be held virtually or within government facilities instead of private hotels.

PM Shehbaz Sharif concluded his address by warning hoarders and profiteers, stating that the state will take stern action against those attempting to exploit the current economic situation.
