Govt Imposes Work From Home and Remote Learning Nationwide

Federal Govt Approves Nationwide Remote Work and Online Classes to Save Fuel

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Government has formally approved the implementation of mandatory “Work from Home” (WFH) and remote learning across the country. This strategic move aims to slash national fuel consumption as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East disrupt global oil supply chains.

A high-level cabinet committee, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, finalized the “National Action Plan for Fuel Conservation” on Thursday. The committee recommended these emergency measures following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route that has triggered fears of a petroleum shortage and sent import premiums soaring.

The government intends to revive the remote-work protocols successfully used during the COVID-19 pandemic. By shifting public and private sector offices to remote operations and moving schools and universities to online classes, authorities expect to significantly reduce the daily demand for petrol and diesel.

“We are taking proactive steps to maintain market liquidity and prevent panic buying,” a senior official stated. The government also confirmed that while current fuel stocks remain sufficient for nearly four weeks, conservation is essential to safeguard foreign exchange reserves against rising international oil prices.

The Ministry of Information Technology and provincial chief secretaries are now coordinating to ensure a smooth transition to digital platforms. The plan also includes a proposal for weekly petroleum price revisions—starting March 8—to reflect the volatile global market accurately.

Educational institutions, particularly in major hubs like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, are preparing to pivot to distance learning modules. This decision follows recent HEC initiatives to boost digital skills, including the National Skill Competency Test, ensuring that the country’s digital infrastructure can handle the increased load.

Alongside the WFH mandate, the government has directed provincial administrations to launch a crackdown on fuel hoarding and smuggling. High-level monitoring teams will oversee the distribution of petroleum products to ensure that artificial shortages do not disrupt the supply chain for essential services.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) will officially notify the specific working days and exemptions for industries like manufacturing and healthcare in the coming days.
